The nine steps involved in a routine dental check-up and cleaning

Here’s a fun breakdown of what to expect during a routine dental check-up and cleaning:

1. Arrive during your scheduled appointment time. From the moment you step into Dr. Garrett’s office, you’ll be greeted by smiles (behind the masks, of course!) and a team ready to make you feel at ease. 
2. Asking questions about your oral health. Next, your dental hygienist or dentist will discuss your medical history and any oral health concerns you’re experiencing. 
3. Dental examination with Dr. Gregory Garrett. Our dentist then conducts a thorough dental exam. Using a small mirror and special tools, they’ll check your teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of cavities, gum disease, or other potential issues. You might also get an oral cancer screening.
4. Dental x-rays. If needed, our team might take dental x-rays to understand what’s happening beneath the surface. This helps to identify hidden cavities, bone loss, or other problems that aren’t visible during the standard exam. 
5. Dental cleaning (prophylaxis). Our dental hygienist removes both plaque and tartar buildup using special tools. Once that’s done, they polish your teeth with a gritty toothpaste to leave them feeling smooth and squeaky clean.
6. Flossing. Next, the dental hygienist carefully flosses between each tooth to remove debris, even in the sneakiest of spots. If you’re not consistent with flossing at home, this step also helps remind you how refreshing clean gums can feel.
7. Fluoride treatment if needed. Dr. Gregory Garrett may apply a fluoride treatment to wrap up your cleaning. This quick step strengthens your enamel and provides extra protection against cavities. 
8. Ask any questions you have about your oral health and future treatments. Once your cleaning is complete, Dr. Gregory Garrett will discuss your oral health, answer any questions, and recommend any treatments if necessary. It is also the perfect opportunity to ask about tips for brushing, flossing, or anything else you’re curious about.
9. Schedule your next appointment in advance. Before you leave, the friendly staff will help you schedule your next appointment, ideally six months later. Mark your calendar because keeping up with regular visits is the best way to maintain that pearly white smile!
