Dental implants are transforming millions of smiles with missing teeth, providing a solution that looks, feels, and functions just like natural teeth. Life is challenging, but even more so for those with missing teeth. The social consequences are apparent: missing teeth can affect your love life and career.
However, the impact missing teeth can have on your health can be equally, if not more so, devasting. The void missing teeth left behind in your mouth can open the door for infections and misalign other teeth that would otherwise depend on the missing tooth for support.
But there is good news. At Wilmington Smiles in North Carolina, Dr. Gregory Garrett has repaired countless smiles using dental implants. Let’s learn more about this incredible dental innovation.
A dental implant is a revolutionary restoration made up of three separate parts. The first part is the dental post, made using biocompatible titanium. The post is inserted directly into your jawbone and bonds with the bone during osseointegration.
The abutment is the connecting piece that attached the post to the third piece, the dental crown. The connecting part resembles a socket you would screw a bolt into.
Another way to describe it would be to think of the post and abutment as a lightbulb socket, with the dental crown (the part that makes up the visible tooth) being the light bulb that screws right in.
When done correctly, dental implants can be stronger than natural teeth as the posts have a stronger bond within the jawbone than even natural tooth roots.
The implant process starts with your first visit. During this visit, Dr. Garrett will examine your oral health history and current condition to ensure you’re a good candidate for the procedure. Those with current issues such as gum disease or tooth decay must have those problems addressed first beforehand.
Also, children and adults under age 21 may not qualify for this treatment as their jawbone structure is still developing. Treatments like bone grafts may be necessary in some cases before getting an implant if the underlying bone is too weak to support the post.
After you get the green light, Dr. Garrett will schedule your implant surgery. This procedure requires just one visit and involves placing the titanium post into your jawbone.
Recovery after the implant surgery is quick as far as what you feel. There is usually minimal postoperative pain associated with implant placement. The tissues and bone will continue to heal for three to six months, with limited to no associated pain. During this time, your soft tissue must heal as the bonding process completes. Dr. Garrett will determine if a temporary crown or appliance is needed to protect it while it bonds with your jawbone.
There will be some physical discomfort after the surgery, which is usually managed well by over-the-counter pain medication.
The final touch will be the placement of your permanent crown, which is custom-designed to perfectly match the color and shape of your surrounding natural teeth.
